Outdoor AV & Audio Systems

Outdoor AV must work across open boundaries, variable background noise, sunlight, moisture, and widely separated seats without becoming intrusive. GGIS divides patios, pools, lawns, and dining areas into practical zones. Distributed landscape speakers run at lower individual levels provide more even coverage than a few loud directional speakers, improving clarity near listeners while reducing spill toward adjacent properties.

Environmental ratings require context. IP65 means an enclosure is dust-tight and resistant to water jets; it does not permit submersion. Suitability still depends on heat, UV, salt air, mounting orientation, drainage, and the actual exposure. Displays, speakers, junctions, conduit, amplification, and control coverage are therefore evaluated as one outdoor system rather than treating an IP code as a complete installation specification.

What we deliver

  • A scaled zone plan relates seating, property boundaries, hardscape, vegetation, elevation changes, ambient noise, and preferred listening directions
  • Sonance, Polk Audio Atrium, or Klipsch AW weather-rated speakers are selected by coverage pattern, mounting condition, output need, and landscape integration
  • Distributed landscape speakers at lower individual levels cover lawns and pools more evenly than a few loud directional speakers
  • Amplifier channels, impedance, power, thermal load, headroom, DSP, and per-zone volume limits are calculated for the final speaker topology
  • IP65 means dust-tight and water-jet resistant, not submersible; heat, UV, salt air, drainage, mounting, and exposure still govern suitability
  • UV-resistant cable, exterior-rated junction methods, drip management, buried conduit, pull points, and spare pathways support durability and service
  • Patio, pool, kitchen, and lawn zones can operate independently or join indoor audio through Control4 or Savant without duplicating confusing controls
  • Network coverage is verified at streaming devices and control locations instead of assuming indoor WiFi reaches reliably through exterior walls
  • Commissioning balances adjacent zones, checks intelligibility, confirms display readability, and records control limits

How we approach it

DESIGN

We walk outdoor areas near their normal use times and record seating, sun path, reflective walls, grade, irrigation, wind, salt-air exposure where applicable, road noise, and neighbors. Coverage is drawn toward listeners and away from boundaries. Distributed landscape speakers are compared with directional surface speakers using desired level and uniformity, not appearance alone. IP ratings, operating temperature, UV exposure, mounting, and drainage are checked for every location. The plan also covers amplifier sizing, equipment location, WiFi, conduit, service access, and coordination with landscape, pool, electrical, and structural work.

PROGRAM

Each outdoor area receives a clear source and volume model, with names that match the physical property. Control4 or Savant pages group zones intentionally while preventing an accidental whole-property startup at excessive volume. Amplifier DSP, high-pass protection, subwoofer crossover, input sensitivity, and output limits are configured within the capabilities of the selected equipment. Streaming accounts and source ownership are assigned to the owner, and outdoor displays are given suitable power and input sequences. Schedules are used cautiously so music or screens do not activate unexpectedly in an occupied neighborhood.

INSTALL

Speaker mounts, stakes, burial locations, and display brackets are placed according to the approved coverage and structural conditions, not shifted casually to simplify a cable route. Exterior cable transitions are protected from UV, moisture paths, irrigation, and physical damage; conduit remains serviceable through accessible pull points. Rack amplifiers are ventilated and labeled by zone, while any exterior enclosure is used only within its environmental and thermal suitability. Minor eligible work may be completed within California B&P §7048 limits. Larger buried pathways and low-voltage runs are coordinated with an appropriately licensed C-7 contractor, while new outdoor circuits remain with the C-10 electrical trade.

TEST

We verify every speaker for polarity, channel assignment, clean output, weather-protected termination, and balanced level at the intended seats and walking areas. Adjacent zones are tested separately and together to find abrupt changes or excessive spill beyond the property. Subwoofer integration and protective filtering are reviewed at useful playback levels, not only at idle. Displays are checked from expected seats under representative daylight for glare, image visibility, control response, source stability, and audio routing. Network control, streaming, grouped zones, limits, shutdown, and recovery after power interruption are included in the owner walkthrough.

Frequently asked questions

Why use several outdoor speakers instead of two powerful ones?

Outdoor sound lacks room boundaries to redistribute energy. Several landscape speakers near listeners can run at lower individual levels and create more even coverage. A few directional speakers mounted far away must play louder to reach remote seats, producing hot spots and more spill. We lay out coverage by zone before determining speaker count.

Can a regular television be installed under a covered patio?

A roof reduces direct rain but does not remove humidity, condensation, dust, insects, heat, UV, reflected sunlight, salt air, or wind-driven moisture. Even IP65 means dust-tight and resistant to water jets, not submersion. We match the display's documented rating, temperature range, brightness, mounting, and drainage requirements to the exact location.

How are buried speaker cables protected?

The pathway is designed around the site, using appropriate exterior cable and conduit where specified, protected transitions, accessible pull points, and separation from irrigation or other utilities. Trenching and regulated scopes are coordinated with the responsible landscape and appropriately licensed contractors.
