Motorized Window Shades
Motorized shades are measured architectural assemblies with power and control dependencies. Opening geometry, roll direction, motor capacity, bracket support, pocket clearance, fabric travel, and light-gap expectations must agree before an order is released.
Power architecture should be decided early. Wired shades create a permanent power and control system and are best considered during new construction or open-wall renovation, when pockets, blocking, wiring, and power-supply access can still be coordinated before drywall. Battery shades reduce disruption in a finished retrofit, but they require an ongoing battery-maintenance plan and do not suit every opening, fabric, shade size, or cycling pattern. We select Lutron or supported Somfy solutions from those constraints rather than treating power method as an afterthought.
What we deliver
- Multiple field measurements per opening to identify out-of-square jambs, obstructions, and mounting constraints
- Inside, outside, pocket, fascia, and exposed-roll details coordinated with roll direction and finished clearances
- Solar openness, privacy, exterior appearance, glare, and room-darkening expectations reviewed by orientation
- Wired power planned during open-wall work as a permanent architecture with accessible supplies and service paths
- Battery shades selected only within manufacturer size and fabric limits, with a documented maintenance plan
- RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks QSX zones coordinated with keypads, presets, schedules, and supported automation interfaces
- Facade groups designed to preserve local override while supporting practical glare, privacy, and away behavior
- Pockets, blocking, cable exits, power panels, and access panels resolved before drywall limits available options
- Final limits, alignment, clearance, noise, battery reporting, manual controls, and owner instructions checked at handoff
How we approach it
Each opening receives an identifier, repeated width and height measurements, mounting-surface review, orientation, handle clearances, and photographs. We define fabric, view, privacy, exterior appearance, and perimeter-light expectations with the designer. During new construction or open-wall renovation, drawings locate pockets, blocking, cable exits, power supplies, and access panels before drywall removes those choices. For a finished retrofit, battery products are checked against opening dimensions, fabric weight, expected cycling, radio conditions, and replacement access before they are proposed.
Shade zones are organized by room and facade rather than attached indiscriminately to one whole-house command. RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks QSX keypad actions, presets, timeclock events, and supported integration points are named and documented. Schedules include predictable manual-override behavior so occupants can correct glare without fighting an automation loop. Battery status is surfaced only where the selected platform reports it reliably, and the maintenance plan remains necessary even when low-battery notifications are available.
Brackets, pockets, and tracks are set to the surveyed datum, with the tube level and fabric path clear of trim, handles, and neighboring shades. Wired leads and power supplies remain accessible for future service; battery compartments must also be reachable without damaging finishes. Prewire, new power, structural blocking, extensive installation, and finish work are planned with the relevant construction trades.
Every shade is cycled from local control, keypads, schedules, and integrated scenes while we inspect alignment, telescoping, hembar clearance, bracket movement, noise, and repeatable limits. Groups are checked for coherent visual movement without claiming unlike motors will track identically. Wired systems are checked after power recovery; battery systems are checked for reporting, replacement access, and documented battery type. Handoff includes zone names, fabric and product records, controls, override behavior, supply or battery access, and realistic maintenance responsibilities.
Frequently asked questions
Are hardwired shades better than battery shades?
Neither is universally better. Wired shades establish a permanent power and control architecture, avoid routine battery replacement, and are strongest when pathways can be installed during new construction or open-wall renovation. Battery shades simplify many finished-room retrofits, but require an ongoing replacement plan and may not be offered for every opening, shade size, fabric, or use pattern. We decide opening by opening.
Will room-darkening fabric make a bedroom or theater completely dark?
Opaque fabric blocks light through the textile, but a standard roller assembly still leaves side, top, and sill gaps. Better room darkening requires coordinated channels, sill details, fascia or pocket treatment, and accurate mounting. Doors and other openings can still admit light. We define the expected condition before selecting fabric and hardware rather than using fabric opacity as a promise of a completely dark room.
How do motorized shades work with RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks QSX?
Compatible Lutron shades are commissioned as named zones. Keypads can move one opening, a room, or a facade to defined presets, and timeclock events can follow fixed times or sunrise and sunset offsets. HomeWorks QSX supports larger, more detailed architectures; RadioRA 3 fits many residential projects. Product compatibility, device count, power method, and required integration determine the platform.
When should shades be planned during construction?
Plan before framing and rough-in decisions are closed, and certainly before drywall. That timing preserves options for recessed pockets, structural blocking, cable exits, low-voltage power supplies, and accessible service panels. Final ordering still waits for field dimensions at the manufacturer's required construction stage. Early planning defines the architecture; it does not justify manufacturing from unverified drawing dimensions.
